Etymology: In the first meaning after Kretschmer KZ 31, 383 from IE. *gui̯ā́-i̯ei as denominative of *gʷi̯ā́ = Skt. jyā́ beside βίᾱ (from *guíi̯ā) `force' (s. also βινέω), which requires a high date and separation of βία. - As πνεῖ the form may stand for ζάη = *δι-ά(Ϝ)η, from ἄ(Ϝ)ημι, with thematic inflection.
